Whole Wheat Naan Bread

Whole Wheat Naan Bread (pita bread and pizza crust also)

We love this bread! We use it as pita bread or just fold it over and stuff it with hummus and veggies! I use the same recipe for pizza crust or take the smaller pieces to make individual size pizzas.

2 tsp dry active yeast
1 1/2 c. warm water
3 1/2 c. whole wheat flour (white whole wheat works great!)
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp maple syrup, agave, or brown rice syrup

  1. Put yeast, syrup, and water in a large mixing bowl and let sit for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt to yeast mixture.
  3. Knead with hands a few minutes then let sit covered for about 30-45 minutes to let rise... If making pizza, let it rise even longer if you have time.
  4. Heat a skillet on low-medium while preparing the dough.
  5. If making Naan or Pita bread, seperate dough into 8-10 small balls. Roll each ball into 1/4" thick circular pieces. (If making pizza, just roll out to desired size and thickness. Bake at 450 degrees for about 5 minutes, top and then bake an additional 10 minutes.)
  6. Cook in preheated skillet for about 30-45 seconds on each side (if skillet is hot already). If the bread cooks too long, it will get too crispy and will not be able to be folded easily.
  7. Let cool and store in fridge in gallon size ziploc bag.
